Hope Springs Eternal

June 26, 2018

This is a story of hope and hope again... In early 2017, 65-year old Purusha was looking at hip replacement surgery and the prospect of regaining a normal walking ability. She learned about BikePartners.net Folding Bicycle Shop and decided to purchase a Montague Paratrooper Express folding mountain bike from us. Her intention was to use the bike during her rehabilitation to rebuild strength. Since she did not own a car, she liked the idea that the Montague would fold to go onto buses and the SMART train, as well as in the trunk of friends’ cars. As a young girl Purusha grew up in Holland until the age of 28 -- she knows something about the health benefits of bicycling!  Her surgery went well, and things were looking up…

Hope springs eternal in the human breast;

Man never is, but always to be blessed:

The soul, uneasy and confined from home,

Rests and expatiates in a life to come.

  • Alexander Pope (1688-1744)

Then came that knock on the door at midnight on the night of October 8, 2017. Her historic rustic home of 20 years was situated in a beautiful oak grove below Paradise Ridge Winery, off of Redwood Highway in north Santa Rosa. In a flash, her home was gone, reduced to smouldering ash along with her beloved Montague bicycle. The Tubbs Fire had claimed another victim -- one of more than 5,000 homes lost in this catastrophic series of fires in Sonoma County.

I contacted Purusha shortly after the fire, and confirmed my worst fear -- she had in fact lost everything. She needed to get on a bike to continue her post-surgery recovery, but she had little money to spend. I got on the phone and contacted the good people at Montague Bikes in Boston. Without hesitation, they told me they would send a replacement bike right away. I received the bike a few days later and in no time Purusha was back in the saddle, riding again in her new temporary home in Marin County. Her healing hip getting stronger every day.

The pictures say it all: The first hope of a successful recovery from surgery on the day she received her new Montague bike, and the second hope of rebuilding a life after the tremendous losses from the Tubbs Fire.

At BikePartners.net Folding Bicycles, we work with manufacturers that demonstrate integrity not only in the quality of the products they sell, but in the caliber of people that they are. David Montague and his entire Boston-based team at Montague Bikes are just such people. Thank you.
