We will adjust your brakes to function as close to new as possible, permitting the parts aren't completely worn. If they are, we will tell you immediately, have them replaced and adjusted. You know to have your brakes serviced when there is noise present, when you don't stop as quickly (or at all) as your supposed to, when the meat of the brake pads has worn down beyond the indicator marks, or when your bike has been sitting in the garage for 10 years.
